Mastodon es una red social similar a Twitter que ha cogido mucho protagonismo estos últimos días.
Mastodon es una red social de código abierto similar a Twitter que fue creada en 2016 por Eugen Rochko. Por la similitud en el uso, podríamos decir que es la prima hermana de Twitter, ya que es una red social de opinión. La diferencia principal es que mastodon no tiene detrás de cada una de sus publicaciones a una empresa que recoja la información de los usuarios.
Es una aplicación descentralizada, sin algoritmos ni publicidad, y al tener un servidor descentralizado, los usuarios pueden conectarse pudiendo elegir entre más de 2.400 servidores.
Pero, ¿Cómo funciona Mastodon?
En Mastodon los usuarios se agrupan en comunidades, y estas reciben el nombre de instancias. Hay muchas pero la que más número de usuarios tiene es mastodon.social.
Las publicaciones de mastodon reciben el nombre de “toots”. Se puede escribir un máximo de 500 palabras en cada publicación y por supuesto, también cuentan con la posibilidad de repostear y darle a me gusta a los “toots”. Además, se pueden editar los toots.
Darte de alta en Mastodon es tan fácil como darte de alta en Twitter. Ingresamos con un correo y nombre de usuario. La red, al igual que Twitter, funciona como un timeline cronológico. Tiene dos tipos de timeline: el local y la federada. En el local nos aparecen los “toots” de los usuarios de la instancia a la que pertenecemos, y en la federada nos aparecen las publicaciones o »toots” de otros usuarios. A pesar de existir estas instancias, los usuarios de las distintas instancias pueden interactuar entre ellos.
¿Por qué ahora?
A pesar de que Mastodon lleva desde 2016 operativa, ha sido recientemente cuando ha experimentado un boom en el ámbito de las redes sociales. Como consecuencia de las últimas declaraciones de Elon Musk sobre su intención de comprar Twitter, han sido muchas las opiniones que han surgido sobre el tema. A muchos usuarios les agrada la idea de que Musk vaya a comprar Twitter, pero otros temen que Elon Musk convierta Twitter en su altavoz personal y coarte la libertad de expresión. Tras la afirmación de Elon Musk acerca de su intención de comprar Twitter, mastodon experimentó más de 84.000 usuarios nuevos, por lo que no nos extrañaría volver a tener noticias sobre la mastodon.
